The style of this piece was inspired by the looser, chunky linoleum prints of the 70s and by the darker works of Stanley Donwood and Barry Moser. Walden’s home break is in Ventura, California, and winter is when the swells come with bigger surf and perfect offshore winds. The water is cold and dark, the skies grey and low, and it adds to the intimidation of overhead plus sets. We wanted to capture the wave not as a neat and tidy icon, but as it is, a rough swirl of water that stacks up wooly, indifferent and beautiful.
